Valley View schools going high-tech

Valley View School District 365U is now using a new Web hosting parent portal solution called Edline.

For the past month or so, many visitors to the district's Web site have been redirected to some schools' new Web sites from the district's "District 365U Schools" page. If parents have bookmarked the URL from the old school Web site, they will be automatically redirected to the new school site.

Additionally, the "Parent Information" link from the main Valley View Web site will redirect to the newly created Valley View Educational Services Web site on Edline. This link is also provided on each of our schools' Edline Web sites under the "Contents" area.

The Valley View Educational Services Web site contains all the information from the old Web site and more.

Given the structure of the new Web site and the continuity with our new school sites, parents will find navigation much more intuitive and will find the information they are looking for more quickly and easily.

We have also added an electronic bulletin board that will be used to post fliers and event notifications from outside organizations.

The ultimate goal for using Edline as a Web hosting solution is to build home-school connections and keep parents and students more informed.

The Web site portion is just the first step. During the second semester of this school year, Bolingbrook High School will begin using a Web-based electronic grade book called GradeQuick Web. GradeQuick Web integrates seamlessly with Edline and will allow data to be synced between our student information system, Edline and GradeQuick. With this level of systems integration, teachers will never have to create classes, enter basic student information or make changes due to "adds or drops" into an electronic gradebook again. The information is put into the gradebook and updated automatically. Additionally, they will have access to their gradebooks from any computer with an Internet connection.

Once implemented and having verified that the data is syncing properly, the parents and students of Bolingbrook High School will be able to activate their Edline accounts and gain access to this information.

We will also be testing features that will allow attendance and the final grade posting functions to occur through the new electronic gradebook. This will eliminate several steps that teachers must currently perform to report this data.

Upon successful implementation and integration of these systems, the district will make a recommendation to standardize on GradeQuick Web as the electronic gradebook to be used for all schools. GradeQuick Web is a robust gradebook that supports many additional features including progress reports and report cards that could eventually be distributed to parents electronically via Edline.

If the school board OKs it, the district would begin preparing for a districtwide implementation of integrating Edline and GradeQuick Web at all Valley View schools. The added functionality would be available to all schools at the start of the 2009-10 school year.
